More than 30 years with computers

I’m Scott Lutz, owner and lead technician. I’ve worked with computers for over 30 years, and I was fixing them for other people back in the Windows XP days, long before I opened Northwoods Computer Guy in 2010. A lot has changed since then, but the basics of the job haven’t: listen first, figure out what’s really wrong, and explain it so it makes sense.

Most people don’t want to learn how computers work. They want them to work. That’s my job.

Technology doesn’t stand still, so I don’t either. I spend at least an hour every day learning new repair techniques, operating system changes and the latest threats, so the answer you get today is a current one.

Community first

This is a local business, and I want it to feel like one. I’d rather you walk in, say hello, and leave understanding your computer a little better than you did.

Being close by means you can drop by or call the office instead of waiting on hold and explaining your problem to a stranger. If I recommend something, you know where to find me afterward.

I like to give back where I can. I volunteered at events for the Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce, then served on its board and as Vice President of the Board of Directors, and I’ve donated my time and IT skills to the Langlade County Boys & Girls Club.

What makes me different

  • Plain speak

Technical explanations without the technical language. You shouldn’t need a dictionary to understand your own computer.

  • Peace of mind

You’ll know what I found, what I’m doing about it, and what’s next. No surprises, no mystery.

  • Always learning

New threats and new technology appear constantly. I stay current so you don’t have to.

  • Local and personal

Your neighbor, not a call center. When you phone the office, you’re reaching the person who’ll do the work.

  • Done fast, done right

Fast doesn’t mean careless. Most repairs take 24 to 48 hours, and I won’t hurry past a problem to hit a number.

  • Yes, I can

Most of the time, that’s my answer. And when a job isn’t mine to do well, I’ll point you to someone who’s a better fit.

What I work on

Living in the Northwoods means I see an incredible variety of computers and situations, so I’ve built my business to help with almost anything tech-related and to keep learning something new from each job.

  • Windows, all the way back

From Windows 3.x and DOS to Windows 11.

  • Linux, too

Ubuntu and Debian-based systems are my favorites, for people who want something a little different.

  • Office and money software

Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, QuickBooks, Quicken and Square.

  • Scams, viruses and failing parts

Spotting scammers, removing malware, tracking down hardware that’s going bad, and fixing settings that were set up wrong.

  • Help from a distance

Fixing many problems remotely, and telling you honestly when it needs hands-on repair instead.

  • Starting a business or growing one

Making a plan to bring in new technology, then installing or upgrading it.
